My parents have said that I can build a house on the land they own next to their house. What do I need to do?

Consider whether they should transfer the land to you so you don't end up building a house which they subsequently own (in case of falling out, etc). It could also make a difference from a tax perspective so consult an accountant.

Decide if you are going to manage the project yourself or use a main contractor such as a builder. If using contractors make sure you trust them, they are insured, and there is a proper contact in place between you.

Apply for planning permission and building regulations approval. You may wish to use an architect or other professional to prepare the plans and submit the application. Make sure you take professional advice at all stages of the project.

Check the title deeds as well to ensure there are no restrictions on building an additional dwelling on the land. You may wish to hire a conveyancing professional, i.e. a solicitor or notary with expertise in this area, to check this for you.

That's the basics to make sure you can build but there's a lot to house building, so make sure you read up further on it and take appropriate professional advice at all stages.
