    I have a freehold title absolute. Freehold was bought in 1965 but there is an old underlease with 10 years to go. the land registry will not take this off automatically as thought they should as it appears they should have cancelled it when the lease was cancelled in 1965 when the Freehold was bought.

    You could (a) apply to discharge the lease once the time has passed, (b) apply to court for an order to remove the lease (expensive and could alert the tenant, (c) obtain defunct lease indemnity insurance.
