    My conveyancing solicitor is trying to get me to committ to a completion date without first definitely fixing a date for exchange of contracts.

    A gap of 14 days between exchange and completion is in theory not unreasonable however the circumstances of a particular transaction will sometimes dictate a shorter gap. Ask your solicitor to explain the reason behind the proposal of having less than 2 weeks between exchange and completion.
