    If I built a house for what reason would I have to live in it for at least a year before I sold it?

    You don't have to live in a house to sell it. If you live there it reduces your capital gains tax liability I believe - speak with your accountant for professional financial advice. From a legal perspective you can sell a house you own whether you live there or not.
