We bought a new house that had chimney breasts removed years ago. The chimney is supported by a timber lintel. We have been advised this is insufficient and a steel beam needs installing to make it safe. Our neighbours have been given all this information, along with our builder's insurance certificate that covers any damage to their property in the unlikely event this work will cause any. They are refusing to sign the party wall agreement. Where do we stand if something happened to the party wall now?
