• Changing Conveyancing Solicitors

By Guest on 04th Oct 2016

Hi there, I am currently in the process of buying a house and feel we are close to exchanging. However, I am now having a very bad time with my solicitors and feel they are the cause of undue delay. I am curious as to whether it is possible and indeed advisable to change conveyancing solicitors at such a late stage?
    Many thanks,

    Hi,

It is.certainly possible, you are free to cancel the retainer at any time. Is it advisable? That's impossible to say without all the facts however I would counsel caution. The transition to a new lawyer won't be instant. You will need to go through the process of formally instructing the new firm and providing ID and other client due diligence material. If you are getting a mortgage the offer will need to be reissued to the new firm. You may need to pay part of your bill to the old firm and after all that you might find that it was the seller's solicitor or someone else at fault (it is not uncommon for an estate agent to try and convince you to cut corners by saying your solicitor is being pedantic even if he isn't) and you are no better off. Changing conveyancer should be the last resort
