    I have recently bought an allotment from a private party and would like advice on how to transfer the ownership without using a solicitor

    You first need to know if the land is registered at Land Registry. Do you have Official Copies of the seller's legal title? If so you need the seller to sign a form TR1 (or TP1 if you have bought only part of his land) and to provide you with form ID1 signed by a solicitor. You need to submit these to the Land Registry using application form AP1 and paying the appropriate fee. If the land is not registered then you really ought to instruct a solicitor. In any event there are a number of issues that might need to be considered and the best advice is to instruct a solicitor
